Dolls and Ceramics: Safari Momoko & Medusa Pot

March 27, 2023 Megann Zabel
Momoko Safari Dry Wind and Medusa Pot

In recent years, I have been putting together a small collection of old plaster slip-casting molds for ceramic work. Some of the molds are a bit goofy, like animal and people figurines. I wasn’t sure what to do with them until I came up with a new idea a couple months ago. I planned to use slip-casted figures as feet for wheel-thrown vessels. Think a claw-footed tub, but ceramic bowls ad the tub and figurines as the feet. I am still developing the process and the medusa pot is my first prototype. I am not in love with the manganese glaze, but everything about this project was an experiment.

The figurines are cute little ladies in big dresses holding flowers. I altered the ladies by adding snakes to their heads to make it a medusa pot. I quite enjoyed finding a way to make this slip-casted mold a bit of a new idea.

The dolls pictured are the Sekiguchi Momoko “The Safari of Dry Wind,” including the cold version (blonde). I really love the face screening, but I find it isn’t the easiest to photograph. Parts of it get a bit washed out. They are both wearing their original outfits.

Did you notice the hoya plant in the pot? I’m also a plant enthusiast!

There are more images of the pot and dolls on my Instagram account.

Dolls and Ceramics: Coney Island Poppy Parker & Ugly Cup

Since I started my ceramics journey about a year and a half ago, it has been hard to figure out what to post on my social media accounts that are doll-centric. Should I post my ceramics work there? I didn’t know. I decided I would try a creative strategy of posting dolls and ceramics together. Welcome to the weird posts dolls and pots. Here we go.

Pictured is the lovely Coney Island Poppy Parker dressed in pieces of the 2013 Integrity Toys Monogram Completist outfit. The cup is the first hand-built cup I made when starting my ceramics journey. I made sure to decorate it with lots of techniques. I lovingly call it my ugly cup. It gets a lot of use as a mount for my phone holder so I can make videos of my work.

Tiny Ceramic Dolls

Ceramic Porcelain Peg Dolls 1

Over the holiday season in 2022, I decided to experiment with making ceramic peg dolls and, eventually, turning many of them into ornaments. As the project progressed, I had fun picking iconic people/looks for some of the dolls. Do you recognize some of the dolly friends? Perhaps you noticed the Lady Gaga, Cia, and Ruth Bader-Ginsburg dolls? It did not take me long to realize I really enjoy translating a look into a peg doll. There are still more dolls in the works, but I’ve taken a short break to work on other projects. What peg dolls would you like to see in the future?

The clay aspects of the dolls were made using a low-fire smooth clay and underglazes. I am currently learning the process of China painting to start using on peg dolls in the future. Assembly of the dolls was accomplished using jewelry wire.

Tiny Hitty Dolls

What’s cuter than a Hitty doll? Tiny Hitty dolls, imho. Typically, traditional Hitty dolls are about 6-1/2 to 7 inches tall. These little Hitty dolls are about 3 to 3-1/2 inches tall. The doll on the left is made by Gail Wilson and the dress is made by me. Gail also makes a tiny Hitty with blonde hair. I purchased one a little while back, but I have not had a chance to make her a dress quite yet. The Hitty friend doll on the right is made by Ae and Holly. She came with the dress.

It’s amazing to see people can carve a wooden doll so small. I have carved traditionally sized wooden Hitty dolls, but the tiny ones might be out of my wheelhouse. I have more pictures of the dolls on my Instagram page. See the link in the paragraph below.

Pastels of Eden, Thiago, and Lilith

Mademoiselle Eden Monsieur Thiago Lilith

These dolls finally managed to make their way out of their boxes. Oh, the pastels! When I saw Monsieur Thiago, I just knew he would need to be part of the Eden and Lilith party. Thiago is so photogenic. It’s hard for me to pass up dolls with fun-colored hair. Eventually, I’ll have a dolly hair rainbow.

The dolls have a ridiculous amount of amazing accessories. I love tiny doll rings and each doll has one. Necklaces, purses, earrings, amazing shoes, and extra hands? Yep, they have plenty. Sometimes dolls inspire me to add an extra accessory before I leave the house.

These dolls are made by Integrity Toys. Their official names are Mademoiselle Eden Blair, Monsieur Thiago Valente, and Mademoiselle Lilith Blair. These dolls are wearing their original outfits and accessories.
