Dolls and Ceramics: BJD Mermaid and Raku Pot

July 10, 2023 Megann Zabel
micro mermaid bjd raku

As time goes by, I think my interests in dolls are getting smaller and smaller. This tiny mermaid BJD is only about 5.4cm / 2-1/8” tall from head to tail. When I first encountered this doll artist, it was common to track them down on social media as Guliver Small. I’m not sure if that has changed, but I often find new work under Geliefuxiaoxiao. However you find this artist, I cannot express enough how amazing these tiny little BJDs are in the world of miniatures. They are strung, hand painted, and use the tiniest supplies and details.

The ceramic trinket box is another in my series of raku pieces. I used Mayco Oil Slick raku glaze for the surface decoration. The finish reminds me of human treasures lying at the bottom of the ocean, like ruins from ages ago. Thus, I thought my little mermaid might go well with the lidded box.

Dolls and Ceramics: Puppy Garden Momoko and Raku

The raku trinket boxes continue with a black and white theme. I love how the white crackle glaze turned out. I added some gold leaf to a couple of the pieces, including lining the inside of one of the boxes. I like a little extra bling. I think the color scheme and design are giving off Chanel vibes.

The doll pictured is the Momoko Petworks CCS Puppy Garden/Stars and Papillo 09AW. She is wearing a prototype pattern I haven’t finished quite yet. I’ve always loved this Momoko and I’m so glad she’s a part of my collection.

Dolls and Ceramics: Dazzle Doll and Raku

July 3, 2023 Megann Zabel

Did you know there was a whole line of miniature Barbies in the 1980s? They are amazing little dolls made by Mattel that are only 4 inches tall. I have a small collection of the Dazzle dolls, including one pictured. This doll is called “Dazzle” and is based on Golden Dream Barbie. She’s currently wearing a bit of mix and match pieces.

For the month of July, the studio is doing a special show of alternative firing methods of ceramic pieces. I tried out raku again this summer and the piece pictured was the first item to come out of the glowing hot kiln and into a fiery metal can. I’m digging the crackle glaze. There are plenty more to come and they only get better, in my opinion.

Dolls and Ceramics: Hitty, Quilt, and Medusa Pot #2

May 5, 2023 Megann Zabel
Hitty doll, YoYo Quilt, Medusa Pot

The picture above has a whole lot of recent happenings. I have been busy trying out all kinds of new ideas.

Hitty has a new yo-yo quilt to add to her little home. It is completely handmade using the Clover extra small yo-yo maker. I used up lots of fabric scraps, including some remnants from Hitty dresses I’ve made in the past. The quilt has 140 total yo-yos. It was a very relaxing and portable project.

Hitty is wearing one of the first outfits I made for these kinds of dolls. I am currently making more embroidered pinafores as my portable project. I made this Hitty from a Gail Wilson Hitty kit.

The Medusa pot is my second attempt at the project. You can see Medusa pot #1 here. It’s still a work in progress, but I like the idea. The glaze needed more of a generous coating for the planned cool results, but I’m better prepared for the next project. Trial and error will eventually yield the optimal results. In the words of Mad Eye Moody, “CONSTANT VIGILANCE!”

Dolls and Ceramics: BJD Hybrid and Heart Boxes

April 30, 2023 Megann Zabel
Peakswoods Hybrid KoonieS Doll Chateau Heartbox

The doll comes from a dear friend of mine, Alison. She was parting with this doll at a convention and I fell in love with her. My friend has such a good eye for color, fashion, and interesting BJD hybrids. She even dressed the doll in this cute ensemble! The doll pictured is a hybrid of a Peak’s Woods KoonieS head on a Doll Chateau kid body. The outfit is from a Tonner doll called “The Intriguing” that fits the Antoinette body. The lace bodysuit is a little tight and makes in hard to pose the doll, but I do my best to make it work since I love the attire.

The ceramic item pictured is my heart box made from a slipcasting mold. It’s an old Duncan mold I picked up a couple years ago and it’s one of my favorites. I typically put a few pieces of handmade heart-shaped recycled paper in each box.

There are more images of several heart boxes and the doll on my Instagram account.
