Dolls and Ceramics: Dazzle Doll and Raku

July 3, 2023 Megann Zabel

Did you know there was a whole line of miniature Barbies in the 1980s? They are amazing little dolls made by Mattel that are only 4 inches tall. I have a small collection of the Dazzle dolls, including one pictured. This doll is called “Dazzle” and is based on Golden Dream Barbie. She’s currently wearing a bit of mix and match pieces.

For the month of July, the studio is doing a special show of alternative firing methods of ceramic pieces. I tried out raku again this summer and the piece pictured was the first item to come out of the glowing hot kiln and into a fiery metal can. I’m digging the crackle glaze. There are plenty more to come and they only get better, in my opinion.

There are more images of all these items on my Instagram account.

Dolls and Ceramics: Vintage Skipper and The Bunny Bowl

April 7, 2023 Megann Zabel

A friend commissioned a challenge — a large serving bowl with cute bunnies around the edges. This is a part of my new ceramic series that combines vessels with objects from old slip-casting molds. I also made a Medusa pot in the same fashion. I picked up a couple bunny molds a few months ago and started using them just in time for Easter.

Typically, my ceramic work is pretty small. It was a nervous task to take on a big bowl. The bowl is a slab laid into a plaster mold. I slip-casted six bunnies and attached them to the bowl. After some careful drying of the bunny bowl, I added eyes with underglaze and bisqued the piece. I added a clear glaze and called it good. It’s a tad wobbly, but it is pretty decent for my first large prototype in this series.

The doll pictured is a vintage Skipper in a random bunny costume that, I think, was originally intended for a BJD. She’s wearing Momoko boots.

There are more images of the bowl and doll on my Instagram account.

Poppy at the Beach

The beach vacay for the year has come and gone, but I got some fun photos of Poppy at the beach. The blue-haired “Looks a Plenty” Poppy is such a great doll. I’m a sucker for a doll set that ends up being several dolls in one, especially if they have wild hair colors. I haven’t used the red or blonde-haired versions of Poppy yet, but stay tuned to see them in future photos.

It was an interesting experience trying to balance keeping a doll upright and avoid waves with a camera. Poppy Parker was much luckier than a Momoko doll that took a swim (a few times). She will be seen in a future post.

In the early summer, I picked up the fabulous Barbie Look Collection Poolside Fashion Pack. Poppy is wearing most of the pieces from the Poolside set. Is it too much blue? I felt that way at first, but it has grown on me. The robe floated in the wind and really provided the beach vibes.

Going on vacation any time soon? I always recommend grabbing a doll and taking it with you. Some of my most interesting doll photos are on location while I’m catching a breather from everyday life.

I will have a few more photos on my Instagram account, if you want to see some more blue-haired Poppy eye candy. Support an artist! Visit my Etsy shop. You can also follow my Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest pages.

My Friend Mizi

Have you ever seen a Mizi doll? She’s a newer fashion doll to hit the scene. She has articulated joints, making her more posable than some other dolls. Mizi is a good price for an articulated collector’s doll, but her plastic does seem a little less robust than her rivals.

My Mizi had a photo session today in one of my first gown designs. It’s funny to look back on my work and say, “Yeesh, I’ve come a long way.” The dress is still acceptable and fits Mizi okay. Mizi is also wearing the FR Queen V crown, Mattel doggy, and Integrity Toys necklace and ring. I think Mizi is going to get a new hairstyle in the future.

Barbie with Fur

It's another dolly dress up day and it's Barbie's turn. She's dressed in a pale pink dress, necklace, and earrings by Integrity Toys. The fur is a fabric scrap I picked up at the IFDC (International Fashion Doll Convention) a few years ago. The fur really makes the outfit, I think.
